When it falls

13th day of the waxing moon, in Chaitra. Like every lunar festival it lands on a different Gregorian date each year. Muhurtha works the date out from the positions of the Sun and Moon, using the rule for this festival; see how every festival is dated.

The story

Anang means 'bodiless', the name of Kamadeva, the god of love, after Shiva's fire reduced his body to ash when he disturbed Shiva's meditation. His wife Rati prayed, and he lived on without a body. The day honours love and a happy marriage.

How it is kept

Couples worship Kamadeva and Rati with flowers and sugarcane, and pray for a happy marriage.
