The story
Bathukamma is Telangana's flower festival, nine days of worship of the goddess as a stack of seasonal flowers. It begins on Mahalaya Amavasya and ends with Saddula Bathukamma, two days before Dussehra. The name is said to mean ‘mother, come alive’.
How it is kept
Women gather flowers such as tangedu, gunuka and marigold, build them into a conical stack, and carry it to a central place in the evening. They sing and dance in a circle around it, and on the last day the stacks are floated on a pond or river.
