The story
Sankranti is the day the Sun moves from one zodiac sign into the next, here from Makara into Kumbha, and a new solar month begins. Many homes keep it as a day for a bath, a gift and a quiet prayer to the Sun.
How it is kept
Bathe early, offer water to the Sun at sunrise, and give something, such as grain, sesame or a meal, to someone in need. The regional solar calendars begin their new month today.
