The story
In the month of Magha the gods are said to come down to bathe at the holy rivers, so a dip on its full moon is thought especially meritorious. It is the great bathing day of the month-long Magh Mela at Prayag.
How it is kept
Pilgrims bathe at dawn at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Varanasi and other rivers, give charity such as sesame, blankets and food, and keep a fast.
