When it falls
5th day of the waxing moon, in Shravana. Like every lunar festival it lands on a different Gregorian date each year. Muhurtha works the date out from the positions of the Sun and Moon, using the rule for this festival; see how every festival is dated.
The story
Snakes appear in fields when the monsoon floods their burrows, and the day honours them — Shesha, on whom Vishnu rests; Vasuki, Shiva's necklace; and the serpents of Krishna's stories.
How it is kept
Milk and flowers are offered at anthills and to clay or silver snake images. Digging and ploughing are avoided.
