The story
Narali Purnima, the coconut full moon, falls on Shravana Purnima, the same day as Raksha Bandhan. Koli and other fishing families of Mumbai and the Konkan coast offer a coconut to the sea, to Varuna, to thank it and ask for a safe season, and boats go back out after the monsoon ban on fishing.
How it is kept
Decorated coconuts are carried to the shore in procession and offered to the sea with prayers. Boats are painted and garlanded, and families cook with coconut, such as narali bhat, sweet rice with coconut.
