The story
The demon king Hiranyakashipu had a boon that he could be killed neither by day nor night, neither indoors nor out, by neither man nor beast. At dusk Vishnu burst from a pillar as Narasimha, half man and half lion, and killed him on the threshold to protect his devoted son Prahlada.
How it is kept
Devotees fast through the day and worship Narasimha at twilight, the hour he appeared. Temples hold special abhishekam in the evening, and the story of Prahlada is read.
