The story

Paryushana is the most important Jain festival: for Shvetambar Jains, eight days in the monsoon, when monks and nuns stay in one place. The Kalpa Sutra, which tells the life of Mahavira, is read aloud in the temples.

How it is kept

People fast as they are able, from one meal a day to all eight days, avoid root vegetables, go to the daily sermons and temple readings, and give to charity. The days end with Samvatsari.
