When it falls
Full moon of Jyeshtha. Like every lunar festival it lands on a different Gregorian date each year. Muhurtha works the date out from the positions of the Sun and Moon, using the rule for this festival; see how every festival is dated.
The story
On the full moon of Jyeshtha, Lord Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra are brought to the bathing platform at Puri and bathed with many pots of water. Tradition says the deities then rest for a fortnight before the Ratha Yatra.
How it is kept
Pilgrims gather in Puri to see the bathing, and temples elsewhere hold their own. Devotees chant and share prasad.
