The story
On Navami, the day before Vijayadashami, the tools of a livelihood are cleaned and worshipped: machines, vehicles, books, instruments and weapons. The idea is gratitude, and a request that they serve well in the year ahead. It is kept in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Tulu Nadu, and the Mysuru Dasara court has long worshipped its royal weapons on this day.
How it is kept
People wash the vehicle or tool, mark it with sandal paste, turmeric and kumkum, hang flower garlands, offer fruit, coconut and sweets, and do a short aarti. Work stops for the day, and a lemon or coconut is often placed under a vehicle's wheels.
