The story
Vijayadashami is the tenth day: Rama killed Ravana, and Durga killed Mahishasura. Both stories say the same thing — good wins, eventually. It's judged in the afternoon (aparahna), which is why it sometimes lands a day before the Navami-at-sunrise date.
