When it falls

Full moon of Ashwina. Like every lunar festival it lands on a different Gregorian date each year. Muhurtha works the date out from the positions of the Sun and Moon, using the rule for this festival; see how every festival is dated.

The story

On the full moon of Ashwina, Bengali and Odia households worship Lakshmi at home, and the night's name, Kojagari, is said to mean ‘who is awake’. The goddess is believed to go about asking who is awake, and to bless those who are. In Maharashtra the same night is Kojagiri, with spiced milk set out under the moon.

How it is kept

Rice-paste alpona patterns mark the floor, the goddess's footprints are drawn towards the house, and naru (coconut sweets), fruit and khichuri are offered. Families stay up late, and in Maharashtra sweetened milk is left in the moonlight and then drunk.
