The story
The darkest night of the year, lit up. Rama returned to Ayodhya; Lakshmi rose from the ocean; Krishna's Narakasura victory was celebrated. Diyas are set out so Lakshmi can find her way in. It's judged at twilight — Lakshmi Puja time — which occasionally makes it fall a day before the Amavasya-at-sunrise date.
How it is kept
Clean the house, rangoli at the door, Lakshmi-Ganesha puja after sunset, sweets, and lamps in every window. Jains mark Mahavira's nirvana; Sikhs, Bandi Chhor Divas.
