Kali Puja is kept at midnight on the new moon of Ashwina, the same night much of India lights Diwali lamps. In Bengal, Odisha and Assam the dark goddess Kali is worshipped through the night, in homes and in pandals, rather than Lakshmi. It is also called Shyama Puja.
