The story

Vishnu's abode, Vaikuntha, is said to open its northern gate on this day, and those who pass through it are believed to be freed. Tradition connects this with the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, who asked that those who entered Vishnu's northern door should find liberation.

How it is kept

Vishnu temples such as Srirangam, Tirupati, Udupi and Bhadrachalam open a special north-facing gate. Devotees queue before dawn, fast and keep a night vigil.
